Conversion Camping Tips

from: http://ecotourism.etravelnetpro.com/benefits-of-ecotourism/conversion-van-cam...

Conversion van tenting does not give you the luxury of life in an RV, nor the discomfort of sleeping in a tent. It can be robust to soundly warmth a van at night, but it’s low-cost compared to an RV, and you’ll go places they cannot. We spent greater than 25 nights sleeping in our conversion van final year.

Life In A Conversion Van

Make your van into something that’s useable for you, particularly if it should be your residence for days or even weeks at a time. For my spouse and I, this meant having house to maneuver around. We took out the 2 center seats which, I satisfied Ana, would be good armchairs for the dwelling room. Then we had sufficient space for dressing or cooking. The bench-seat in back folds out into a comfortable bed, so we had been all set for camping.

When touring, you need a system of group to keep your space contained in the van livable. After our first long journey, we noticed the various things we never used. We bought more efficient after that. We’re also able to maintain the space open, regardless of carrying many things, by using plastic storage tubs you should purchase nearly anywhere. They stack well, and for those who want extra room at night time, you can put them on the roof. They’re rainproof with the lids snapped on.

Heating A Conversion Van

Camping in a van can be cold at instances, because it was for us in the deserts of Arizona final winter. We began the van and cranked up the heater from time to time, however just for transient periods. The danger of carbon monoxide poisoning is just too great to leave the car working while you’re sleeping.

We also cooked to heat up the van. Our propane camp range burned very clean. Any time it was cold, it was time to prepare dinner dinner, breakfast, or tea. This heated up the van nicely. Again, because of carbon monoxide, I wouldn’t recommend ever sleeping with a propane burner going. Still, typically a quick warm-up is all you need earlier than you crawl underneath the blankets for the night.

The secret to heating a conversion van when tenting is to provide up. Enjoy dinner time heat-ups, however until you’ve got electric energy, I don’t know of a protected way to heat a van all night. Instead, you may warmth yourselves. Put on heat clothing. Carry more blankets than you suppose you’ll need. Prepare a thermos bottle stuffed with sizzling coffee each night time, so it is going to be waitng for you in the morning. You get to warm the van while you make it, and heat up yourselves ingesting it for breakfast.

Advantages Of Conversion Van Camping

Touring and tenting in a conversion van costs less than in an RV. The preliminary price is quite a bit much less if you buy used, as we did, and the price of driving it is substantialy less. We averaged 18 miles per gallon on our final cross-country trip. Most leisure autos are lucky to get half of that, and they’re very costly to maintain.

In contrast with tent camping, a van is far more comfortable. Even if you backpack, you’re probably going to drive some sort of automotive to wherever you go. With a van, you may come inside if it starts to rain. If you happen to’re backpacking a great distance from residence, it can save you on motels on the drive to and from the trailhead.

Tenting will be extra snug in an RV, but not in all ways. It is nice, for instance, to park anywhere. We have taken naps in parking lots, and no one was the wiser, due to tinted home windows, curtains, and the inconspicuousness of a van. At a free campground in Florida we acquired one of the best spot, on a bank overlooking Lake Talquin, as a result of our van was small enough to suit there, unlike most of the RVs.

It’s nice to have the ability to drive anywhere. Within the conversion van, tenting wherever we’re when it will get darkish is not any problem. Lastly, some bigger RVs drag a automotive around because the massive rig simply isn’t sensible for daily driving. Our coversion van is a second residence AND our main automobile for shopping or going to work. That’s flexibilty.

Cold Sores... Down There

Blister wonderful

I'm starting to have feelings for this guy friend I've been fooling around with, but I'm worried he isn't feeling the same way. He's stopped short of having full-blown intercourse with me, which I find odd, although I don't want to have sex yet because I have genital herpes and I'm not ready to tell him. (I take an antiviral drug for this daily, and I'd have him wear protection during intercourse.) Do you think he knows I have herpes? Maybe he just isn't interested in me romantically and doesn't want me getting too attached. — Puzzled

When you start to care about somebody, it's nice to give him little romantic gifts — flowers, a gourmet cupcake, a sweet card, weeping genital sores.

Surely you'd tell the guy pronto if you had a cold: "Hey, don't get too close, because you could catch this and have an unpleasant few days." But colds go away. Herpes is forever. Yeah, I know, so are diamonds. But, unlike a mammoth rock on a girl's finger, a big genital pustule isn't anything you want to be showing off to the crew at the office: "Look at it gleam under the fluorescents!"

Genital herpes hasn't always been such a big stigmatized deal — to the point where it's led to the tanking of countless potential relationships. Until the late '70s, it was seen as "cold sores down there" and often not even worthy of a visit to the doctor. Except in rare cases, the physical symptoms are relatively minor. At the first outbreak, especially, it feels a bit like the flu, with fever, headache and muscle aches. There's also tingling and itching, and there can be pain, burning during urination (and don't forget the yucky sores!).

So, what led to all the stigma? The sexual revolution, for starters. In the mid-'70s, with lots of people having lots of sex, genital herpes spread (as probably did the common cold). In 1979, the CDC, seeing the herpes stats rising, got a little hysterical and announced an "epidemic" (of cold sores!), and the media ran with it. In 1980, Time magazine declared herpes "The New Sexual Leprosy," and in 1982, the Miami Herald called it a "cruel disease." "Cruel disease"? Multiple sclerosis is a cruel disease. But, an infection that gives you the itchies and makes you walk funny for a few days? As herpes simplex expert Dr. Adrian Mindel told the Independent in 1987, "For the majority of people herpes is ... nothing more than an occasional nuisance."

The thing is, if you're having an outbreak of your "occasional nuisance" and your naked parts are rubbing against somebody else's naked parts, you could infect him. The risk of transmission may be reduced by daily antiviral treatment and condom use — provided there are no contagious areas outside the condom zone. But, you can be in a contagious stage and not know it. Of the approximately 1 in 6 U.S. adults ages 14 to 48 who have genital herpes, 80 percent don't show visible symptoms, says herpes researcher Dr. Anna Wald. Research by Wald and her colleagues found that even when herpes carriers showed no symptoms, they were contagious 10 percent of the time. Of course, that's on average. Wald explained to me that there's a range: "Some people may be contagious 1 percent of the time, and others 30 percent, but we don't have a good way to predict who is who."

Putting this guy at risk for herpes without giving him any choice in the matter was not only unfair but pretty dumb. For many people, the betrayal is the biggest problem. If you tell somebody before he fools around with you and maybe pull a fact sheet off the Internet to allay his fears, he'll be less likely to ditch you, and he won't have the rage he would at being unwittingly exposed. To launch the conversation, maybe say something like "Ever gotten a cold sore? I get them sometimes ... but not on my lip!" And then, as datingwithherpes.org advises, don't say "I have herpes," which makes you sound like you're having an outbreak right then. Instead, say "I carry the virus for herpes" and explain how often you have outbreaks ... which should make it sound more like a manageable annoyance than the guy's ticket to a lifetime of Crusty Pustules Anonymous meetings.

NOTE: There are press reports, tracing back to the respected Herpes Viruses Association of the U.K., that drug company Burroughs Wellcome caused the initial stigmatization of people with herpes by marketing the stigma to sell its drug. The association could provide me no evidence supporting its accusation, nor could I find any in 51 years of newspaper and journal articles (from 1960 to 2011). I'm very much for going after drug companies for malfeasance, but not in the absence of evidence they've committed any.

Hiding Cold Sores Until They Are Gone

from: http://m.theglobeandmail.com/life/fashion-and-beauty/beauty/ask-a-beauty-expe...

The question
Every winter I get hit with attack after attack of cold sores that take forever to heal and are hideous. What can I do to minimize the healing time while covering them up?

The answer
Cold sores are not only painful but also embarrassing, so I can understand wanting to cover them up. You should know, however, that they will take longer to heal that way. Reducing daily stress and eating a healthy, balanced diet will help the healing process (and prevent frequent breakouts generally), but if you’re looking to heal and cover one up immediately, try the Polysporin Cold Sore Healing Patch.

These transparent patches have hydrocolloid to treat the sore and adhere to the skin invisibly, so you won’t have a glob of shiny medicated balm hanging off your face. Big bonus with these: You can wear makeup over them without disrupting the healing cycle, so you can cover up the cold sore with a little foundation and/ or lipstick.

Is There A Cold Sore Gene?

1697128489

I was very interested to see this medical report.. I have always thought that I must have a cold sore gene since I often get these ugly blisters whereas my husband never gets them. Is this fair? Why are some people pre-disposed to having cold sores?

I found the report here: http://www.webmd.com/skin-problems-and-treatments/news/20111118/gene-may-be-l...
By Denise Mann WebMD Health News Reviewed by Laura J. Martin, MD

Gene May Be Linked to Frequent Cold Sores Study Suggests Some People May Have a Genetic Predisposition to Repeated Cold Sores

Nov. 18, 2011 -- Most of us have had an occasional cold sore, but some people get the painful, unsightly sores over and over again. These cold sores, which tend to appear on or around the lips, are caused by herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1).

Exactly why they occur more frequently in some people was not known, but now new research suggests some of us may have a genetic predisposition to frequent, severe cold sores.

The study is published in the Journal of Infectious Disease.

If the new findings are validated in other groups of people and researchers can zero in on exactly how a gene increases cold sore risk, new treatments won't be far behind, says study researcher John D. Kriesel, MD. He is an infectious disease specialist at the University of Utah School of Medicine in Salt Lake City.

Cold Sore Gene

Kriesel and colleagues narrowed down their search to one specific gene called C21orf91, which the researchers also call the cold sore susceptibility gene 1.

But "genes only account for 21% of susceptibility to cold sores, the rest of the risk is environmental," Kriesel says. Outbreak triggers may include sun, wind, trauma, or stress.

As of now, many people who get frequent cold sores are treated with antiviral medication that targets HSV-1. These can be taken to prevent an outbreak or to shorten an existing one. Oral antiviral medications include acyclovir (Zovirax), famciclovir (Famvir), and valacyclovir (Valtrex).

"This research may help us predict who is vulnerable to getting cold sores frequently. And the hope is that it will lead directly to new therapies," says infectious disease specialist Bruce Hirsch, MD.

"Anywhere from 50% to 100% of us have this virus and only a third get cold sores frequently. That is intriguing," he says. Hirsch is an attending physician at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, N.Y.

Surviving Winter

P455

from; http://www.theboltonnews.co.uk/news/9352996.Diet_is_key_to_keeping_healthy_th...

FROM avoiding chocolate to drinking red wine, the list of food-related suggestions from so-called health experts is long and often contradictory.

Yet, as winter arrives and the annual calorie fest looms, there’s never been a better time to think about what we’re eating and how it’s affecting our health.

“In the run-up to Christmas, our bodies have a multitude of attacks to deal with,” says Lucy Jones, registered dietician and presenter of Channel 4’s new health show, The Food Hospital. “Besides the usual colds and flu, we’re also well known for abusing our bodies, with poor dietary changes and increased alcohol consumption.”

To shed some light on how food affects our bodies, Channel 4 has examined the science behind using food as medicine. It’s perfect timing for those worried about their immune systems ahead of the party season. “This is known as the age of the dietician.

Over the past 10 years, people have developed a real fascination with the way that diet can influence our health,” says Jones. From asthma to varicose veins, the series shows how, by eating and avoiding certain foods, you can ease the symptoms. Oily fish apparently helps asthmatics, while anyone with varicose veins should steer clear of white bread and other refined foods.

“We’re not trying to promote nutrition as an alternative to medicine — people should always still go to their GP. But we’re showing that there’s a lot you can do to help your condition,” adds Jones.

“Food impacts on the workings of every single cell in our body because it’s our fuel, so every bit of cell renewal, every bit of metabolism, will be affected by what you eat.” The presenting team, including Dr Gio Miletto, a GP, and gastrointestinal surgeon Dr Shaw Somers, also aims to debunk some of the myths about healthy eating, from overdosing on socalled “superfoods”, such as blueberries and goji berries, to relying heavily on supplements.

“You should be able to get everything you need from a healthy, balanced diet,” says Jones. Give your body a boost and prevent or cure some of the most common health complaints of the season with Lucy Jones’s top tips.

Bloating Cause: A lack of dietary fibre can lead to a build-up of gas in the stomach, as food sits and ferments rather than being digested. Bloating can also be caused by stress, owing to changes in the digestion of foods. Some people are also sensitive to “fermentable carbohydrates” — known for their gas-producing properties.

Advice: Aim to spread meals evenly throughout the day and eat slowly and calmly. Limit alcohol, keep well hydrated to avoid constipation, which encourages bloating, and consume lots of fibre to keep your bowels moving. Eat fruit, vegetables, pulses such as beans and lentils, oats and wholegrains, avoiding fatty foods. Some people may find certain healthy foods which easily ferment, such as apples and leeks, worsen their symptoms.

Indigestion/heartburn Cause:
Stomach acid refluxing back into the food pipe (oesophagus) can cause a burning feeling. Stress can increase the amount of acid produced and being overweight also makes people susceptible.

Advice: Big meals, fatty foods, smoking, fizzy drinks and alcohol cause the valve at the top of our stomach to relax, which accounts for the massive increase in heartburn at Christmas time. Avoid eating too much at any one time and don’t eat for the two hours before bed. Vegetables offer protective nutrients, which can help repair the damage caused to your oesophagus from heartburn.

Cold Sores Cause:
The herpes simplex virus, with attacks triggered by a range of factors including stress.

Advice:

Try to keep your immune system strong by eating a nutrient-rich diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables, sleeping properly and taking regular exercise. Avoid the temptation to overindulge in sweets. Some people find increasing their intake of lysine — found in fish, chicken, eggs and potatoes — or taking lysine supplements helps to reduce the number of attacks. But these supplements could also raise cholesterol, so consult your GP before changing your diet.

Stress Cause:
Stress is a natural phenomenon that gives us our fight or flight response, but chronic stress is damaging to health and increases the risk of illness and chronic disease.

Advice: Stress hormones make you crave fatty and sugary foods — but these can distort your blood sugar levels, leading to spikes in energy levels and mood. Consuming a low glycaemic index (GI) diet can help to keep your blood sugars stable. Consider including more grains, nuts and seeds in your diet. Also, remember that a diet low in B vitamins and iron can leave you feeling exhausted and unable to cope, so beef up the wholegrains and green leafy vegetables. Also eat two brazil nuts a day for selenium, as low levels are linked to low mood.

Insomnia Cause:
Trouble falling or staying asleep is closely linked to stress and can be caused by various illnesses and medications.

Advice: Avoid having excess caffeine, from the afternoon onwards and alcohol, which causes broken sleep, and try having a high carbohydrate snack or hot milk shortly before bed as this can help stimulate insulin production. Eat plenty of magnesium-rich foods, such as almonds, cashews, bananas and dried apricots, as deficiency causes insomnia.

Colds and flu Cause:
The change in weather means spending more time indoors and this increases the risk of catching colds and flu from others.

Advice: Eat plenty of vitamin C (citrus, tomatoes, berries, kiwi and pineapple) and zinc (seafood, dairy, eggs, poultry and nuts) to keep your immune system strong. Garlic has anti-viral properties so is a great food for keeping colds and flu at bay.
Also, keep well hydrated as it is common to urinate more and sweat when you are unwell, so extra fluids are vital. Hot drinks can help to ease chest symptoms, so keep a steady flow going. And the old adage about chicken soup is true — its anti-inflammatory properties help to reduce the symptoms of respiratory infections.

Hangover Cause:
Excess drinking! Alcohol is a diuretic causing dehydration. It makes blood vessels constrict, inflames the stomach and triggers low blood sugar.

Advice: A sports drink containing sugar and salt (it’s very easy to make your own rehydration drink) can help ease some of the symptoms. A low-fat cooked breakfast with orange juice for vitamin C, wholegrain toast for stabilisation of blood sugars and eggs for cysteine is also ideal.

A study published by the Journal Of Inflammation Research found that cysteine, an amino acid found in eggs, breaks down the hangover. It’s best to have them boiled or poached rather than fried in fat

Advice on Getting Rid of Cold Sores

P381

from: http://treatmentsforcoldsore.com/any-cold-sore-treatment/

Anyone know of a treatment that can cure coldsores as fast as possible. I work in a job where I meet people face to face daily and having a coldsore wont be good at all.

Answers: Thomas Answered:
From a local pharmacy there are many but Zovirax (Topical) or Compeed (Small Patch) are a couple of big brands.

Nat Answered: Yes, cold sores usually can be gotten rid of overnight(see below) my sister did this a while ago before going to a birthday party for her mom, I'm not sure on the details though but I can ask. Also, being aware of your cold sore and becoming self-conscious will be more harmful to your interactions than the cold sore itself, so if you run out of time to get rid of the cold sore, simply forget about it and don't sweat it. Cheers, Nat

AT HOME TREATMENTS FOR COLD SORES:
Peppermint oil it has been discovered the essential oil of peppermint has been found to sink into the skin and helps heal the virus . Peppermint oil is absorbed through the skin, so that even small amounts can be toxic and should never be ingested.

Take daily vitamin supplements particularly those containinglarge amounts of antioxidants and vitamin B. Vitamin B deficiency has been shown to have a direct connection with a rash and anti-oxidants are essential in maintaining healthy body functions.

Exercise -not only does it strengthen your immune system, it is an effective way to remove stress, one of the most common triggers of cold sores. Avoid salty foods, like potato chips, and acidic foods, like lemons and other citrus fruit, as they have been proven to aggravate the sores and cause them to become more painful.

Do not store your toothbrush in the bathroom. Moisture in the bathroom extends the life of the herpes virus which causes cold sores on your toothbrush and will cause more sores to form in your mouth keep your toothbrush dry.

Keep the infected area clean wash the infected area numerous times daily with warm soapy water to help disinfect and heal the area.

Wash your hands people would be amazed at what their hands touch on a daily basis and most people are not aware of the things they come into contact with. It is vitally important that you keep your hands clean if you have a cold sore, because we unconsciously touch or faces and you may touch your cold sore and get some of the fluids on your hands and then pass the fluids to another area of your body, or another persons body, where a new sore will then develop.

Ice icing the infected area can help relieve some of the pain and irritation associated with cold sores and can also help the virus from spreading more, as the virus stops growing in colder temperatures.

Use oil-based products, like vasoline, around the infected area. This helps to prevent secondary infections of bacteria and speed healing

OTHER TREATMENTS FOR COLD SORES: The use of an over the counter (OTC) anesthetic cream to help relieve pain and discomfort. If your cold sore has become severe or has not cleared up within two weeks, you may want to go see a doctor and have them prescribe an oral prescription medication, which is a stronger form of an over the counter medication and may be needed to clear up your particular case of cold sores.

Everyday Cold Sore Remedies

from: http://www.office20con.com/health-well-being/other-health/cold-sore-remedies-...

There are a lot of cold sore remedies inside the house. It’s always good to keep them around just in case there’s a cold sore outbreak with someone inside the house.

People think cold sores just come out of nowhere. They think it’s similar to a pimple. This is a wrong assumption however because cold sores are actually caused by a virus.

The herpes simplex virus or HSV-1 commonly causes cold sores on the lips or around the mouth. This is because the virus is usually contracted through contact of saliva or mouth.

The virus then easily slips into the nerves near the mouth or skin. Many people get the virus at an early age without even knowing it. This is because the virus doesn’t usually immediately cause cold sores.

They remain dormant in the nerve cells near the skin until something triggers it. The scientific and medical community however, cannot pin point yet the main trigger for the cause of cold sores.

The Link Between Genital Herpes & Cold Sores

from: http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/health/2011/0927/1224304790240.html

Genital herpes is caused by the herpes simplex virus, of which there are two types. Type 1 commonly causes cold sores on the mouth and lips but can also cause genital herpes.

Type 2 causes genital herpes but can also infect the mouth. Once it has infected someone, the virus remains in their nerve cells for life.

How does it spread?

Most people contract genital herpes by having vaginal, anal or oral sex with an infected person. Even close skin-to-skin contact with someone who is infected can spread the virus. Typically this occurs when the carrier of the virus is experiencing an outbreak of symptoms. But because some sufferers can have a herpes outbreak without showing any symptoms, infection can also occur during these periods.

What are the symptoms?

The first symptoms usually appear within two weeks of a person becoming infected. These last for several weeks and include tingling or sores on the genital or rectal area. In women, sores may develop inside the vagina and on the cervix. In men, lesions usually appear on or around the penis. Small red bumps appear first and develop into blisters.

These become itchy and painful sores that typically develop a crust before healing without leaving a scar. Other symptoms during the first outbreak can include fever, headache, muscle aches and painful urination.

There may be vaginal discharge or swollen glands in the groin area. Some people who have mild symptoms, or none at all, may not know they are infected, but they can still transmit the virus to others.

For most sufferers the virus causes outbreaks several times a year. Recurrences are generally much milder than the first outbreak and tend to become less common over time.

Can it be cured?

There is no cure for genital herpes, but antiviral medicines may help treat symptoms and prevent future outbreaks. This can decrease the risk of passing herpes to sexual partners.

Genital herpes can cause medical complications in some instances, particularly in the case of babies born to mothers with the condition. To help prevent the risk of contracting genital herpes, avoid oral-genital contact if either sexual partner has any symptoms of oral herpes.

Using barriers, such as condoms, during sexual activity may decrease transmission when used consistently and correctly, but transmission can still occur because a condom may not cover all infected areas.

Cold Sores vs. Mouth Ulcers

P2453

from: http://mouth-ulcers.org/cold-sores/

Cold sores are generally confused with canker sores. There is common misunderstanding that cold sore is synonym for canker sores. However, this is not true and medically they are two different terms and diseases altogether.

Canker sores are painful white or pale yellow color ulcers that develop inside the mouth due to damage of the mucous membrane lining and they are not contagious.

On the contrary, cold sores also known as fever blisters or herpes labialis and are agonizing red color sores or blisters that erupt on the mouth, lips and other facial area. This type of sore can develop on fingers and chin as well. They last for about two weeks.

Cold sores are usually filled with clear fluid, they burst after sometime and scab is formed over it. They are highly contagious and can easily spread by direct contact. Cold sores are caused due to herpes simplex virus type 1 infection.

Cold sores are caused by using or sharing wash towels and razors of infected person. Kissing, sharing utensils with the person infected with cold sores can cause these ulcers. It may also spread through skin to skin contact while infected skin is shedding.

Herpes virus enters through sever in the skin. Not everyone who catches the herpes simplex virus gets cold sores. However, once a person is infected and gets cold sores, they have a tendency to recur and the virus usually lie dormant in nerve cell scabbard. Cold sores virus travels from the cut in the skin to the cells of the epidermis (upper layer of the skin) and through the epidermis it further moves up to the nerve cell and rests in an area called ganglion.

Ganglion is an anthology of nerve cells. The recurrence of cold sores is attributable to reactivation of the herpes virus. This could be due to persisting medical condition like common cold, flu and fever.

Stress, poor immune system, excessive intake of alcohol, hormonal changes, menstruation and external damage to skin due to excess sun exposure or physical injury to skin are other reason that may reactivate the latent virus.

Prodrome of cold sores: •
Pain in mouth • Pain on lips • Fever • Swollen glands • Sore throat • Burning sensation or tingling around the lips and mouth • Redness around the lips • Itching around facial areas Symptoms of cold sores in children:

Apart from the above prodrome, children may encounter other symptoms like: • Excessive saliva • Dehydration • Headaches • Nausea Treatment of cold sores: •

Apply over the counter acyclovir, Zovirax cold sores cream on the affected part. • Pencyclovir available in Soothelip brand is also effective cold sores cream. •

Medicines like acyclovir and valacyclovir can be taken orally. •
Patches that look like band aid are available as over the counter medicine. They contain hydrocolloid gel that helps in healing cold sores. Nevertheless, patches can be used only on one or two cold sores as in multiple outbreak case it may not be possible to use several patches for obvious reasons.

• For relief from painful blisters take ibuprofen or medicine containing Lidocaine. • Benzocaine also aids in alleviating pain and to an extent irritation caused by the cold sores. In severe cases of cold sores, antibiotics and anti-viral medication helps recover faster. Anti-HSV agents that are available in pill form are effective in treating serious cold sores condition.

As mentioned earlier cold sores can recur and therefore it is imperative to take precaution and prevent reappearance. Avoid excess sun exposure and use sunscreen or lip balm as protection. Consciously do not share utensils, creams, cosmetics, towel and razors with infected persons.

Avoid kissing or any kind of direct contact with the skin. Maintain hand hygiene. Do not touch other parts of body when infected with cold sores. Stress and lack of sleep also triggers eruptions hence try to avoid it.

Cold sores can be treated with over the counter medication. However, maintaining proper hygiene and taking precautions can significantly reduce recurrence of cold sores.

How Fast Does Abreva Work To Get Rid Of Cold Sores

P736

by Kristie Wells

I recommend it highly, if applied at the first sign of a cold sore, it will minimize discomfort and shorten duration…often never letting one really get started. I had a cold sore once, I put Abreva on it and it went away in like 2-3 days.

Out breaks usually take about 1-2 weeks to heal, applying Abreva regularly can cut your normal healing time in half. You can also prevent out breaks when you appy it at the first signs or symptoms of an out break.

I would recommend it but there is also another product called Lipactin, it does the same thing as Abreva but it’s way cheaper and clear.

The best thing that I have found for cold sores is Super Lysine lip ointment. It not only works fast but doesn’t cake off like some other things. you can get it at a herbal health food store. Try it! you won’t be disappointed.

I get cold sores and have tried many treatments. Docosanol 10% (Abreva) is FDA approved and clinical trials have shown that it does shorten duration of cold sores, but after reviewing the clinical trials it appears that it only shortens the duration by around 10-15%.

That means a cold sore that usually takes 10-15 days to resolve, might clear up one day sooner. 34% reported that early treatment stopped the sores from developing, but so did 23% who used a placebo.

I do use Abreva, but I think the best aspect is that it makes me feel like I am doing something. Not sure it makes a huge difference. I think the best way to treat cold sores is to keep them from happening.

I realized that drinking alcohol was a trigger for me and after drastically reducing my alcohol intake I went from a cold sore every 2-3 months to maybe 1-2 a year. Also use sunblock on your lips, UV light is a major trigger. Please tell me how quickly abreva worked for you, if at all. And if you recommend it or not for cold sores?

Anti Cold Sore Foods

P2982

from: http://www.diethealthclub.com/health-issues-and-diet/cold-sores/cold-sores-di...

Cold sores or fever blisters are fluid filled blisters that may occur anywhere in the body—especially on the face, around the lips, and on the genitals.

These blisters are usually small and are caused due to the herpes simplex virus. The skin around the blisters is usually painful, swollen, and red.

Though the blisters usually remain closed, excessive scratching may cause them to break open and release a clear fluid which is infectious. Eventually, the sores become scabbed. In a few days, they may become completely scabbed. It takes several days for the sores to heal completely.

When you are planning to set a cold sores diet for yourself, start off with including some important amino acids such as lysine.

Also make sure that arginine, another amino acid, is in very low quantities in the diet. Arginine is an amino acid which is required by the herpes virus to replicate itself. Therefore, this amino acid should be avoided completely.

Lysine not only inhibits the multiplication of the herpes virus, it also helps in inhibiting the metabolism of arginine.

Most fruits and vegetables contain lysine. Other foods which are an important part of a cold sores diet and prevention include raw papaya, eggs, avocados, tomatoes, beet, milk and dairy products, and fruits such as apricots, mango, pears, figs, and apples. You will also have to avoid certain foods in your diet.

These include gelatin, nuts, oats, seeds, chocolate, refined flours, brown rice, whole wheat, coconut, caffeine, and protein shakes which include arginine.

Most cold sores dietary supplements will not contain arginine, but if they do, avoid such supplements. The recurrence of cold sores can be limited with the help of a diet to reduce cold sores.

An anti-cold sore diet can help you deal with the outbreaks. Bioflavonoids, vitamin C, zinc, and the vitamin B group are all micronutrients that can help you improve your immunity, thus extending the period of remission between two subsequent breakouts.

Cold Sores Foods As discussed earlier, it is important to consume foods which have a high lysine and low arginine content. Some of the foods which are ideal in such a condition include almost all fresh fruits and vegetables.

Figs and apricots are especially beneficial to those suffering from cold sores. You should also include a lot of dairy products in your diet such as yogurt, milk, and cheese.

Brewer’s yeast, fish, white meat, and eggs are also food items which can be consumed to improve immunity and repress the symptoms of the herpes virus. Fishes like sardines and cod are especially beneficial in your condition.

Consume foods which are high in vitamin C, such as citrus fruits such as oranges, leafy vegetables like lettuce, spinach, and bokchoy, broccoli, cauliflower,

Brussels sprouts, papaya, bell peppers, parsley, and strawberries. Also consume foods which contain high amounts of bioflavonoids.

Such cold sores foods to eat include rosehip, wines and juices made from grapes, apricots, prunes, black tea, and red clover.

Cold sores foods to avoid include artificial sweeteners, white bread, refined flours, refined sugars, caffeine, oats, nuts, and chocolates.

When you have cold sores foods high in arginine should be avoided. So try and avoid consuming foods such as chocolates, peanut butter, porridge, oats, protein shakes, and muscle building supplements.

Cold sores foods trigger off episodes of fever, blisters, and other symptoms related to the herpes virus.

Is vitamin c good for cold sores?
Vitamin C does nothing for cold sores in itself. However, vitamin C is required for improving immunity and a healthy dose of this vitamin can help you increase immunity to a point where there is a large gap between two consecutive breakouts. While citrus fruits are really rich in vitamin C, it is better to have all sorts of fruits in moderation.

Most fruits, whether they contain vitamin C or not, raisethe alkaline levels in the body. Fruits that are rich in vitamin C are also rich in antioxidants as well as lysine, which is an amino acid that helps keep the breakouts of fever blisters at bay.

Vitamin C, along with bioflavonoids and zinc, also helps in boosting immunity and therefore prevents an attack of the virus. It also creates a strong resistance within the body which allows it to fight off all other infections that may ravage your body when you are struggling with the herpes virus.

Vitamin C also helps you deal with the swelling, redness, itching, facial pain, pain in the nerves, tingling, and scabbing, that is often associated with the herpes virus. Vitamin C also helps increase the rate at which the skin heals after the blisters have been scabbed.

Vitamin C may be needed in doses higher than what you normally use because the skin may need a lot of healing as the blisters appear and scab.

Getting Rid Of Cold Sores Once And For All!

P2875

By Sophia Rodriguez

Wouldn't you just love to know how to go about getting rid of cold sores once and for all?

If you've had a few, odds are they are coming back...unless you take action to never have another ugly sore ever again. I was in the same shoes as you up until this summer when I found out how to make my body an inhospitable area for the herpes virus.

Last August, I had an ugly sore on my mouth that was painful, itchy and made me never want to get out of my cave so I wouldn't have to go out in public with this entity growing on my lip. Of course, wouldn't you know it, my ugly sore timed its entrance to peak at the very moment I had to attend a wedding. Pretty hard to back out of a close family member's wedding just because of a deformity growing on my mouth, no matter how much I wanted to hide out in a cave.

So, I researched and dug around on the internet to find out how to heal my sore. Cold sore home remedies was high atop my list since little mini vials of hit and miss gels that promised to reduce the pain associated with herpes sores cost a fortune. I didn't want to reduce the pain of my sore, I just wanted treatments that worked! I wanted to find out how to get rid of them in one day! Was that even possible?

Well, I'm not going to lie I did not read anything that made it completely go away overnight like I had hoped. However, I did find tips that made the swelling go down dramatically. One of these great tips was to apply toothpaste over the wound before going to bed and a few times a day. With just a touch of concealer, I was able to pull off the wedding with hardly any embarrassment or anxiety over my bobo.

After that sore, I swore it would be my last. That was the final cold sore I ever had and I know I will never have another one. It turns out there is lots a person can do to eat the right things and take the right supplements to make herpes sores back away from you. By resetting the PH of your body, your body will not attract or accept herpes into your life ever again.

How To Stop Cold Sores Forever

If you wish to know how to stop cold sores forever, you need to understand what causes a cold sore, also called the herpes simplex virus, and what is a cold sore. This article will attempt to answer all these questions and more.

Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus, a common and infectious virus which is usually contacted during {childhood|youth} and {hides|hides out} in the nerve {ganglia|endings} near where your cold sore usually {appears|looks}. The virus can remain dormant for months or years without reappearing, until your body becomes unbalanced. Your {natural|instinctive} body defenses keep the virus in check until your defenses drop because you may feel tired, {upset|disturbed} or stressed; you resistance is lowered, you have a fever, overexposure to the sun or wind, or maybe you are menstruating, and suddenly you feel that familiar tingling {sensation|feeling}.

This is when the virus is moving down your nerve fibers to the skin surface. Now you feel the tingling, itching, perhaps burning or drying sensations, lasting a few hours or a few days, to be followed by redness and swelling at the cold sore site; the virus is {reproducing|multiplying}.

Next is the appearance of {clusters|clumps|bunches} of small blisters that are painfully sensitive, followed by all the blisters joining to become one large open, {weeping|ugly} sore. This is the most painful and most contagious stage, although next is when it starts to crust over and heal. At this stage it is painful because any movement tends to crack the scab.

Once the scab forms, the sore is healing from the inside out. The virus is retreating, but there is continued itching and some pain and irritation. Once the scab is gone, usually redness remains for another 2 to 14 days. Contagion remains until the spot disappears entirely.

Conventional treatment of the virus includes creams and lotions that can relieve the pain and reduce secondary infections, but there is no cure for cold sores. Preventative measures seem more successful than curative in minimizing the number and severity of infections. Learn to recognize the situations that usually lead to you developing a cold sore and prevent them from occurring. Also recognize the first signs of the onset of a cold sore and apply immediate treatment. A medical practitioner can prescribe antiviral drugs that will minimize symptoms and re-infections.

Avoid contact with the sores; wash your hands immediately if you touch them, and don't share linens and towels with anyone else.

Naturopathic treatments of cold sores include applications of the amino acid lysine, which is particularly effective in preventing or reducing the occurence of cold sores. A salve containing lysine makes an effective lip balm, as dry cracked lips seem to invite a cold sore. Vitamin and mineral supplements may help the body fight the herpes virus, especially vitamin C, E, B vitamins and zinc. A whole foods diet that excludes sugar and refined foods and includes plenty of fiber and alkali-producing foods also can help prevent herpes attacks.

Applying tea tree oil directly to the tingling area or cold sores with a cotton swab can minimize an outbreak, reinfection and spreading. Throw away the swab immediately after using.

The advantages of using tea tree oil are:

* Decreasing pain and shortening the healing time of the herpes lesions.
* Helping to inhibit recurrences
* Assisting in prevention of viral activity by supporting the immune system

Using tea tree oil, avoiding the conditions that bring on herpes attacks, and supporting the immune system through proper diet and hygiene are the best methods for dealing with this annoying and painful virus.
